Formula

Tip amount

bill × (tip % ÷ 100) = tip

Example: 18% on a $45 bill → 45 × 0.18 = $8.10.

Total & per person

(bill + tip) ÷ people = each

Example: ($45 + $8.10) ÷ 2 = $26.55 each.

How much should you tip?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service, with 18–20% common for good service. Counter service, delivery, and other situations vary by region and custom. This calculator works for any percentage, so use whatever is appropriate where you are.

Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total is a personal choice; tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional approach. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer.

Splitting the bill

Set the number of people to divide the total evenly. The calculator shows both the tip per person and the full amount each person owes, so everyone can pay their share without mental math at the table.
